This poem was printed in the June 1957 issue of Shumawa magazine! Please translate this poem into English so that the whole world can view a busy street in central Rangoon in 1957 through Daw Kyi Aye's eyes. This is what I call objective social history recorded by a brilliant female poet. The western media often shows similar scenes in Mumbai and Manila in juxtaposition with high-rise dwellings and playgrounds of millionaires and billionaires of the twenty first century. Daw Kyi Aye vividly depicted noisy scenes of movie ticket touts, beggars, poor street-food sellers, pickpockets, lepers, starving disease-ridden tramps, unclaimed corpses and openly soliciting prostitutes in dirty and smelly streets. The western media often shows similar scenes India (the largest democracy in the world) and the Philippines (the world champion of Human Rights) in the twenty first century. I have not been to Rangoon for decades. So, I am not sure some busy Rangoon streets remain exactly the same like Mumbai and Manila streets! Well, selective pictures of no-go areas of some British cities where prostitutes, HIV-ridden drug addicts and youth gangs frequent will give the same depressing scenes though.
